Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is very common. It is estimated that in Switzerland, half of all men aged between 40 and 70 are affected, and the risk of developing erectile dysfunction increases with age.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction refers to an insufficient or absent erection of the penis during sexual arousal. However, it is only considered a disorder if the problems occur over a prolonged period (at least six months) and in more than two-thirds of attempts. If, on the other hand, erection problems occur only occasionally, this is completely normal.

In everyday language, erectile dysfunction is often referred to as impotence, although erectile dysfunction is only one form of impotence (impotentia coeundi) and the term can also refer to infertility (impotentia generandi).
