Collagen is an important component of joints, tendons, ligaments and bones. Burgerstein Collagen provides 100% pure, bioactive collagen peptides.

What exactly is collagen?

Collagen is the collective term for a group of the most important structural proteins in our body. It is the most abundant protein in the body, accounting for around 30 per cent of all proteins in humans, and provides strength and structural stability to tissues.

Collagen is a key component of:

  •     skin, hair and nails, joints, tendons and ligaments
  •     blood vessels and teeth (a component of dentine)
  •     bones

In the body, collagen literally plays a supporting role. Its fibres can be imagined as sturdy ropes made up of many fine strands. These strands are twisted together in a spiral pattern. This makes collagen particularly strong and resilient. Depending on the tissue, collagen is found in different forms and structures – adapted to its specific functions. (1)

Are there different types of collagen?

Around 28 types of collagen have been identified. They differ in terms of the arrangement of the molecules, the cellular components attached to them, and the location in the body where the collagen is found. All collagen fibrils have at least one triple-helix structure. (2)

The three main types of collagen and their functions:

Type I provides strength to the skin and connective tissue, amongst other things; Type II supports cartilage and joints; and Type III contributes to the skin’s elasticity.

What are the sources of collagen?

In food, collagen occurs naturally only in animal tissues such as meat and fish, which contain connective tissue. Burgerstein Collagen Powder consists of bioactive collagen peptides (bovine) and is 100% pure collagen, with no other additives, sugar or sweeteners.

What are collagen peptides?

Collagen peptides are small protein building blocks derived from collagen. They are highly soluble and can therefore be easily stirred into various foods or drinks.

Who is collagen suitable for as a dietary supplement?

Collagen is suitable for people who value beauty and mobility.

Did you know that the body’s own collagen production starts to decline from your mid-20s? This is why, for example, our skin loses its firmness and elasticity as we age. It can also lead to a reduction in cartilage thickness. The cartilage loses its elasticity and resilience, which can result in joint pain and stiffness.
